The H.M.S. Ajax and River Plate Veterans Association
The Association is open to all who served on the Ajax Cruiser 1935-1948; the Ajax Frigate 1963-1985; served at The Battle of the River Plate; or are relatives or friends of those who did so, or indeed those who served on any previous Ajax and those connected to Ajax and residents of Ajax, Ontario.
Subscriptions are currently £12 per year and £18 for family membership. You will receive a membership card; a list of contact details of current members; quarterly Newsletter (that can also be sent electronically and are on the Members Page) and invitation to attend, with guests, the annual reunion currently held at The King Charles Hotel, Gillingham. This is usually held on the first Wednesday in October when there is a reunion dinner in the evening with a memorial service next morning, followed by the AGM at which members and associates are able to attend and vote accordingly.
The Association was formed in the mid-‘60s when about a dozen ex-crew members attended a River Plate reunion in Plymouth. They were so disappointed with the event that they decided to form their own Association. Eric Smith was ‘volunteered’ to progress this and subsequently became the Founder and Chairman. The first reunion was held in 1965 in West Ham with 7 officers and 40 ratings ‘plus a few wives’ attending.
In later years, due to many River Plate Veterans ‘Crossing the Bar’ (died), membership was opened up to those Ajax crew who served on the 1940-43 commission. Later still, those who served on any of the Ajax commissions and the later Frigate were eligible to join.
We currently have 173 members and associates (These are listed on the Members Page as is a list of Members who have Crossed the Bar).
