The 47th Reunion of The HMS Ajax & River Plate Veterans Association was held at The King Charles Hotel at Gillingham, Kent.
49 Members and guests gathered at the hotel on Wednesday 3rd October 2012 for the reunion dinner preceded by “Up-spirits”. The guest of honour was Lieutenant Commander Tony McColl RNZN and the guest speaker, one of our associates, was Bob Adams. Bob is the son of “Ajax” Adams who was the naval designer of the Ajax Cruiser. Bob delivered a very interesting and informative talk about his father and later made available the book* he had written with all the proceeds being donated to the Association’s 2014 Memorial appeal.
The star prize for the raffle was a limited print of “HMS Ajax at The Battle for Crete” donated by one of our Associates, Clive Sharplin, who had commissioned it. The raffle raised a healthy sum that also went to the Memorial fund.
The following morning members and families attended the St George’s Centre, Chatham Maritime, Chatham, Kent where a Memorial Service was held. Afterwards, members adjourned back to the hotel where the Annual General Meeting was held, the minutes of which are available on the Members Page.
